“Smoke Signals” by Ashutosh Phatak and Dhruv Ghanekar, collectively known as “Ashu and Dhruv,” is an album that showcases a diverse range of musical styles and influences. First released in 2008 under Blue Frog Records, the album presents a fusion of different genres, languages, and cultures. More than a decade after the legacy project is re-releasing under Wah Wah Records, with a fresh reproduced sound to serve as a testament to Ashu and Dhruv’s musical evolution and collaboration along with a rich tapestry of sounds and rhythms.
The album’s title, “Smoke Signals” suggests a metaphorical communication bridging gaps and transcending barriers. Drawing from Western symphony, bebop, Sufi rock, Indian classical, pop, traditional thumri, electronica, and blues, Ashu & Dhruv created a futuristic and twisted vision of India, reflecting the multicultural and multi-dimensional aspects of the country.
‘Distance’ is Dhruv’s debut as a solo artist. This fusion/world effort will set precedents for all World Artists emerging from the continent.
This music is a product of several years of travels and meetings… Recording these tunes has been an incredibly rewarding experience, for several reasons:
As Dhruv said: “It brought me face to face with some of my heroes, musicians who have shaped me in my formative years and some greats who I have met recently, along the way. It has also compelled me to commit to my ideas (however insignificant they sounded in conception).”
Adding to that, it has re-affirmed the old adage: “You never finish a tune, you have to abandon it.” I have been fortunate to have been blessed with many teachers who have guided me in my music and life, my deepest gratitude to all of you.”
He added, “To all the musicians who’ve performed on this album, thank you for making this music yours.”
The Trio Sessions EP features Gino Banks on drums and Sheldon Dsilva on bass, recorded at Yashraj Studios. The tunes have a raw and edgy quality to them as they effortlessly fuse elements of Jazz, Progressive Rock & Indian classical. The music was performed over much of 2013 on the band’s tour to Europe and Asia and finally recorded in 2013.
